Version : 2.7.6.244 and prior

Function

MetaLAN Administrator shows a warning condition for computers that have a duplicate/identical MAC address of serial number.  This means that more than one computer has the same MAC or serial number.  This should not happen unless a computer has had its host name changed and both the new and old entries exist in the database.  Using default settings this will resole itself as the old record is archived.

Issue

On a network using DHCP to allocate IP address, sometimes when a computer receives a new IP address via DHCP the DNS entry of the previous computer will still exist.  In other words more than one computer can resolve to the same IP address using DNS resolution.  This condition can cause MetaLAN to update a computer record with incorrect details because DNS returns an incorrect IP address causing MetaLAN to connect to the incorrect computer.

Resolution

The issue is still current.  The next version of MetaLAN will include a routine to check the name reported by the computer against the DNS name, if they do not match the record will not be updated.
